このプロジェクトは、私が新型コロナウイルス感染症(COVID-19)による外出自粛期間中に、異様なほどの静けさに包まれた横浜を一人で歩いていたときに、都市のイメージはどのように変化するか想像してみたことから始まりました。

同じ光景を見てるはずなのに、私の知っている横浜と違う、どこか遠く離れた場所のようだと感じた都市の姿は、まるで確実に存在しているけど実際には見ることのできない未発見の小惑星と似ているのではないかと考えました。

私たちが都市の姿を記憶に留め、その記憶の総体によって都市のイメージを形成しているだとすれば、たとえお互いの距離がどれだけ離れていたとしても、都市の姿は共有出来るのかも知れません。このプロジェクトは、数光年離れた先に漂う都市のイメージに思いを馳せる試みなのです。

 

This project began when I tried to imagine how the image of the city would change when I was walking alone in the unusually quiet Yokohama during the period of voluntary curfew due to the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

I thought that the city, which I felt was like some faraway place, different from the Yokohama I knew, even though I was supposed to be seeing the same sights, might resemble an undiscovered asteroid that definitely exists but that I could not actually see.

If we can retain the image of a city in our memory and form an image of the city by the totality of our memories, we may be able to share the image of the city, no matter how far apart we are from each other. This project is an attempt to ponder the image of a city that is several light years away.
